2nd Annual School-to-School Symposium on Environmental Education

Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 8:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.

Fieldstone Secondary School

Dear Teachers, Parents, and Administrators,

Please join us for a day dedicated to celebrating and enhancing environmental education in schools throughout Rockland County. This is a unique opportunity for you to learn about curricular and co-curricular successes in other schools and districts, share your experiences, brainstorm strategies for meeting common goals and challenges, and learn more about available resources and models of collaboration and partnership.

Last year’s participants walked away both informed and inspired:

  • “I loved hearing from educators and community members from across the county about effective programs, as well as to discuss common challenges.”
  • “My questions were answered.  I have resources and contacts to get started.”
  • “I loved it!  Great job – Hope to participate next year.”

Building on the successful format of 2009, we’ve added several exciting program features. This year’s agenda includes:

  • A morning welcome, and the Rockland premier of “When Learning Comes Naturally,” a documentary film about innovative environmental education programs in schools. Rachel Grob, Director of the Child Development Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, will introduce the film.
  • A Roundtable Session on Co-Curricular Environmental Education Events & Activities (Iincluding, but not limited to, Earth B.E.A.T., Great American Cleanup, Recycled Fashion Show, Health Fair, Arbor Day, Club)
  • Two Roundtable Sessions on School Greening Initiatives and Projects (see list of roundtable topics below)

A panel discussion on Environmental Education in Rockland County. Our distinguished panel of guests, and their topics, are:

  • Susan Hereth, Education Coordinator, Scenic Hudson, "An Environmental Literacy Plan for NYS"
  •  Dr. Steve Schlanger, Assistant Superintendent, Nanuet Union Free School District, "District-Wide EE & Greening Initiatives
  • Steve Stanne, Department of Environmental Conservation, Hudson River Estuary Program, "Place-based Environmental Education Programs"
  • Kathy Galione, Project Coordinator, Rockland County AmeriCorps, "Volunteer and Community Service for the Environment"

Select from these roundtable topics using the downloadable registration form:

  • Energy Conservation in Schools – Facilitated by the Energy Manager/Educator from Clarkstown Central School District
  • Grant Writing and Healthy Fundraising – Facilitated by the Director of Special Projects and Grants at the East Ramapo Central School District
  • Nature Trails – Facilitated by Dan Sullivan, Teacher/Advisor, Minisceongo Nature Trail Project, Fieldstone Secondary School

  • School Yard Gardens – Facilitated by Master Gardeners from Cornell University Cooperative Extension’s School Garden Network
  • Community Service & Service Learning - Facilitated by ASPIRA Teacher, Fieldstone Secondary School

Please reserve your place by February 19, 2010. Space is limited. We can accommodate up to three guests per school.  Schools are encouraged to send a teacher and a parent representative, as well as the principal.

This year, we are pleased to have added a panel discussion to conclude the day.   We kindly ask that you plan to stay for the full program.
