Code Enforcement Project"Why do we have to go back to the same places for cleanups every year? Where is the enforcement of litter laws?" KRB recognizes that volunteer cleanups are not a sufficient response to the litter problem. Via the Code Enforcement Taskforce, KRB advocates for increased enforcement of laws pertaining to motorist litter and property maintenance (an estimated 50% of litter comes from uncovered trash cans and trucks, loading docks and other sources other than motorist "litterbugs"). The Code Enforcement Taskforce meets monthly and includes representatives from all the Towns in Rockland, coming from police, highway, public works, building and health departments, as well as individual members of the community. Our goal is to support cleanup and beautification efforts through increased enforcement activity. To this end, we share ideas and information to foster improved communication and collaboration, and we have taken several concrete steps:
Most importantly, we support each other in pursuing local solutions to our common challenge of eliminating eyesores through enhanced enforcement efforts. The Taskforce is chaired by Jim Dean, who is a KRB Board Member and the Superintendent of Highways in Orangetown, and the meetings are open to the public (call KRB for details as well as a copy of KRB's Enforcement Report, summarizing the obstacles to adequate code enforcement in Rockland County).

Report a Litterbug! If you see somebody littering from their car, or stuff blowing out of the back of a truck, the Sheriff Dept will send the vehicle owner a warning letter based on your report to Keep Rockland Beautiful. Download the report form and share it with friends. Or give us the following information: Date, Time, Town, and Street of incident, plus vehicle license plate, vehicle make or model and color, type of litter observed, and your contact info for verification. You can email, fax, phone or deliver your complaint by foot to Keep Rockland Beautiful, 10 Maple Ave, New City. E-mail: krbexdir@aol.com, phone: 845-708-9159, fax: 845-708-9165 Complaints are confidential. They are screened for accuracy, which requires that we are able to match the license plate to the type of car, so please don't forget to tell us what kind of car, even as basic as "white pickup truck." They go to the vehicle owner, not necessarily the driver. This can be a good thing (like when the letter goes to the parent of a sloppy teenaged driver...). Contact KRB to receive a free pad of Litter Violation Notices to use to report litterbugs. Rockland's Dirty Thirty(dated material, but great idea...) Is anybody else sick and tired of driving past this dumpsite on Rte 9W just south of Rockland Lake? Click here to see pictures of some of Rockland's messier spots on Flickr.com. The site has a mapping tool, so click "map" and roam around our growing map of Rockland's worst eyesores and most negligent property owners. These eyesores are all candidates for KRB's "Dirty Dozen" Hall of Shame, a project that remains to be worked out. But in the meantime, an alert KRB volunteer has created this map, and guess what? You can add your own pictures to it! Of course, our goal is to post follow-up pictures of these properties looking great because somebody took appropriate action. So if you notice an improvement, please send us a picture of that as well. This project is under development and in need of volunteers to either post or email us good pictures, and then a method for notifying property owners and monitoring improvements. |
